Euro Truck Simulator 2 v1.49.2.6s is rightly billed as a simulator, there are a couple other intriguing layers beneath the driving elements. This is a very legit open-world game, for one, spanning much of Europe, especially if you’ve collected all the DLC. ETS2 also offers the chance to become a trucking tycoon of sorts – with the ability to bring on new garages, employees, trucks, trailers, and more.
The game’s economic layer, with banking and loans to repay, adds an enjoyable challenge and lends depth that a pure-play driving simulator would struggle to attain. Repairing, restoring, customizing, and upgrading your trucks is also a real treat, with physical effects on driving (e.g. maximum freight/cargo weight, acceleration, hill traversal, maneuverability, etc.) that often make the expense quite worthwhile.
Driving itself is a heady mix of beauty (the HD skyboxes are often gorgeous), challenge, relaxation, and time management. There’s plenty of variety in the job market, which only expands further as you open up new skills, locations, and even your own trailers.
Capsule review: addictive, beautiful, relaxing (although it can be tense at times), challenging, and rewarding. Highly recommended.
P.S. Expect to spend a while setting up and perfecting your control scheme and button mapping. There are plenty of guides, though, to draw from.
