Higurashi When They Cry Hou – Ch.1 Onikakushi Full Version is a fantastic horror visual novel. The writing and sound design, as well as separation into several parts, make it a great option for getting into the genre. While the story is also available as a manga or anime, the visual novel version allows for a more gradual, suspense-filled build up than the other two formats allow.
The art, even with redrawn sprites, still leaves much to be desired, and the pacing feels off at times. Nonetheless, I found myself in genuine fear and dread during the more successful parts of the first chapter, despite having seen the anime depiction of the same events. The characters are all likeable, and the chapter is short enough that I didn’t become uninterested or uncaring, even in the less engaging parts. My biggest complaint is that the exposition features about four instances of the main characters playing board games or other type of game, and these scenes feel far too drawn out.
