About Game Roots of Yggdrasil

Game Roots of Yggdrasil is one of the finest games I have played in a good while.

Parts roguelike, parts city builder, RoY is a unique take on combining a few genres. There are elements of Slay The Spire or Monster Train, not so much in the sense of the combat in those games, but in the sense that you pick a path. The home base also reminds me of games like Loop Hero or Card Hunter.

There are also elements of city builders. This isn’t vast scale like City Skylines but similar to games like Dorf Romantik. You can chain building types to get bonuses to improve the key resources of supply, might and ‘magic’, Forgive me on that last one as I can’t quite recall the resource name. To do this to build housing to improve population and interlace it with buildings that improve your gathering of the three key resources. There are gardens, warehouse style buildings, barracks and gatherers.

I’d also say there are elements of games like FTL in that there is a threat to avoid. I won’t say more.

It’s all covered by a story. It’s well written and based on elements of Norse mythology. How authentically it uses Norse mythology, I have no idea. There are some names I have seen in other games or IPs, but it all sounds great.

There’s a stylish look to the game with some lovely character art, pretty effects and a colorful world. Download Roots of Yggdrasil, play and enjoy.
