It is awesome.
I’m a story person, so that’s what most impresses me about Crashlands. Each of the game’s biomes has a dominant culture, with its own stories, history and, no lie, values. You get a few glimpses into the ancient history of civilizations that came before the ones you’re helping now, too. Lest this make you squint with the sudden suspicion that the game is anything less than a total blast, let me return to hilarious. Crashlands’ content is by turns aww-cute funny, terrible-pun funny, creepy funny, what-the-heck-surreal funny, and heaps of regular HA! funny. You can do as many of the side quests as you want, or ignore all the NPCs’ pleas and stay focused only on your main quest; I recomend doing every single side quest. The whole experience is delightful.
Visuals are wonderful — nighttime lighting effects are particularly beautiful, and creature design is distinctive, expressive, and again, hilarious. I want a stuffed slurb, for example, so badly it’s probably illegal in most US states. Slurbs are just the best. They’re bouncy little razor-snails with pointy spikes on their shells and three blinky eyes. And slurb on slurb carnage — I can watch my pet slurb bounce the tar out of another one. . . basically forever. I will never get tired of that.
