I recommend the game with some caveats. First, it’s not done, which is unfortunate given the Coral Island 1.0 release on paper. There are some things which are still being worked on, (and some of those just came out in the recent patch). Things like Marriage, the Merfolk, side bits of story and quests. The game doesn’t feel unfinished, but there are components that will def add value that are known and being developed still.

Second, it is not perfectly optimized. The game hitches here and there, there are minor rendering slowdowns and slightly laggy bits. You can play through these, but it is a minor nuisance.

The good:

This is truly a modern farm sim in a lot of ways. A huge cast of interesting characters, a very progressive, ecological storyline, a big world to explore, it seems like a lot of items, complexity, and crafting at hand. Everything is gorgeous. The music is a delight, the slow unfurl of the story that engages you in this very immediate islander take on climate change is especially welcome. I want to know more about all these characters, and what representation at hand. Truly a gift from the developers to so intricately weave together what feels like a very alive community.

The animations of SO MANY little things are spectacular. People’s houses feel lived in, they feel personal, and unique. Everyone has a kind of voice in the world, and it shows.

If you liked Stardew Valley for how it massively advanced the genre, I firmly believe Coral Island will be the next major step forward. It’s just on the way there, not quite at it yet. Download Coral Island and enjoy play this game.
