Combat is the defining feature of any Tales game, and Zestiria makes a few tweaks to the system such as battles no longer taking place in a separate arena. If there’s a rock to your left when you encounter an enemy on the map, it’ll be there during battle.

The rest of the combat system remains fairly intact – for the uninitiated, that includes chaining combos, a mix of physical and magical abilities, and an elemental strengths and weakness rock-paper-scissors system.

The fusion ability that Sorey unlocks early in the game is incredibly fun and powerful, but there are also genuine tactical reasons to not fuse. It’s not like a Final Fantasy-style limit break that you just want to fire off as soon as it’s ready, though doing so
is rarely a truly terrible idea.

What really lets Zestiria down, though, is its equipment system. Each piece of equipment can come with up to four skills on it which represent a tile on a grid. Match the tiles either horizontally or vertically to enable bonus skills, and fuse matching pieces of gear together to create stronger gear with the skills you want… or in theory, that’s how it works.

In practice, it actually restricts you – you make your way to the bottom of a dungeon, kill the boss and he drops an awesome weapon, but you can’t use it because it doesn’t have the right skills, breaking your horizontal or vertical lines, and equipping it is a net stat loss. It’s a really unsatisfying feeling.

Zestiria sits in an odd spot within the market. For fans of the series, and JRPGs in general, it offers little in the way of surprise, and while enjoyable does come off a little trite. Gamers of this persuasion can probably pick up Zestiria with little fear of a poor experience, but shouldn’t expect to be completely blown away.

Newcomers, however, are thrown head-first into the game’s convoluted equipment and fusion systems. The game does offer the option to (further) simplify combat, but its true intention is to remove any necessity to correctly upgrade your equipment.

Outside this, enjoyment will come down to the individual’s tolerance for Zestiria’s anime influence in its appearance and in its story. If you’re more of a cringer than a cheerer, then you may not want to follow this Shepherd.
