Review Re;Lord 1 ~The witch of Herfort and stuffed animals~ Free Download : A rather good JRPG/Visual Novel (with the general emphasis on the latter). The graphics are very nice, although the backgrounds could be a bit more detailed. Character animation is somewhat basic, but not without its charms… Story is good too, and quite funny in parts.

The battle system is quite good fun and seems easy enough to get to grips with.

Music and voice acting is good, although you don’t get VO when the protagonist is thinking, which does seem a bit weird.

Overall, it’s a fun game. Whilst you wont get Re;Lord 1 ~The witch of Herfort and stuffed animals~ Uncensored adult version on Steam, it does get pretty risque. It could also be regarded as rather dark, especially with regards to what Wilfried does to Fine (and later on to Erika). Whilst ra-pe isn’t uncommon in VN (in Army Gals it can be part of the story), in this it is rather disquieting, both due to Wilfried’s attitude and the girls sanguine response to it.

Important Notes from “INSTALLATION_INSTRUCTIONS.TXT” file that comes with the patch:

  1. The game effects speed will have changed after patching so you will need to adjust them from “system settings->effect speed”.
  2. Videos may not play at all unless you disable overlay support and on some versions of windows they will not play at all – this is a game issue and not to do with the patch. Full screen also may not work depending on your windows configuration.
  3. When you start a new game you have the choice to put in your own name. Although the game will say it’s not supported in the English localization, it does actually work. If you choose to input anything other than the default name it is normal for there to be gaps in the voice acting where the protagonist’s name would be called.
  4. It is normal to not be able to highlight dialogue in the backlog to listen to it again, this was unable to be fixed during development. You may be able to highlight text but it will be offset from the dialogue actually spoken.
  5. It is normal for the occasional menu item to still be in Japanese. Some were not able to be corrected.
  6. This game can be run without Japanese locale after install but any Japanese text in the interface will be mangled as a result.

Now for the bad points: only autosave, have to click to progress the dialogue, no more detailed settings (text speed, toogle on/off voice, etc). The engine/interface irks me wrongly, i don’t like games that make me go their merry way. Hopefully the developer takes notes of the technical problems for their next games.

Despite these problems, i still say give it a go. There’s a free h-patch and the game isn’t a unplayable bug mess (the tutorial bug was already fixed), Sayori art is great and the heroines are cute and captivating for every public (despite the expected cliches/tropes).
